A group of European researchers have examined DNA from skeletons from the period of the Black Death (1347-1353 CE), and believe they now have evidence that the Black Death caused was bubonic plague (Yersinia pestis).

Suggestions for saving money in HE

From Times Higher Education: “Running university terms in shifts and replacing the research excellence framework with a Facebook poll are some of the ideas submitted as part of the government’s online appeal for cost-saving ideas …”

BBC article about the complicated issues around calculating the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions.  A spokesman for the Department of Energy and Climate Change said: “At face value UK emissions look like they have decreased 15% or 16% since 1990. But if you take in carbon embedded in our imports, our emissions have gone up about 12%. We’ve got to be more open about this.”

The Higher Education Academy Scotland has launched a fund to assist Scottish HE staff and students with the costs of travelling to Higher Education Academy events in England, Northern Ireland and Wales.  From their website:

[The fund] is specifically aimed at enabling staff and students in Scottish HEIs to engage with colleagues from other parts of the UK and to support their institution’s priorities and developments in learning and teaching.

The funding may be used to help colleagues attend conferences, network meetings and special interest groups organised (or jointly organised) by the Higher Education Academy and its Subject Centre network, that are being run in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.
