Interesting article about encouraging girls into careers in science, maths and engineering. As we know there is a gender imbalance in these career areas. According to this article, “girlie” role models aimed at helping break down the gender barriers in these subjects are actually putting more girls off. Who would have thought “Computer Engineer Barbie” wouldn’t be persuasive enough to entice girls to go against these traditionally male subjects. And “girly” mathematician Danica McKellar has even written a book aimed at inspiring girls: “Math Doesn’t Suck: How To Survive Middle School Math Without Losing Your Mind Or Breaking A Nail”. But according to this study, it’s not working…in fact it may be putting girls off science and maths even more.
What are your experiences of the gender divide in areas such as maths, science and engineering? Girls, what made you decide to study in these fields? What do you think of the promotion of “girly” role models for science and maths? We would be very interested to hear your comments on this one.
