The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) aims to provide an authoritative and comprehensive list of names of marine organisms. It currently contains information on almost 185,000 species.
You can search the WoRMS database by common or latin name. The search results will include details of phylum, class, order and family for your species. Depending on the information available the results may also include local names (in a variety of languages), information about distribution, and notes on diet, morphology and reproduction. Photographs of the species are often included on the results page.

WoRMS is a useful reference resource for anyone who is writing about the marine environment. It is freely available on the internet and does not require registration or a password.
